In the mid-west coast of Palawan lies a 22,202 hectare terrestrial reservation known as the PUERTO PRINCESA SUBTERRANEAN RIVER NATIONAL PARK. It was created in March 26, 1971 to protect the rich natural resources found in the area. It features spectacular karsts or limestone landscape known as the St. Paul mountain range. Beneath the karsts is an 8.2 km. underground river that flows directly to the sea and is affected by the ocean tide making it unique natural phenomena.
The park contains a full mountain to sea eco-system, which are among the most significant in Asia. It represents valuable habitat important for biodiversity conservation in the Palawan Bio-geographic Province. These forest ecosystems are home to 800 species of plants, 165 species of birds, 30 species of mammals, 19 species of reptiles, and 10 species of amphibians.
Because of its unique geological features and globally significant biodiversity, The area was declared a natural World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational and Scientific Organizations (UNESCO) on December 4, 1999.

IWAHIG PRISON AND PENAL FARM was established by the Americans in 1904 to supply food to other prisons all over the country. Iwahig has since become synonymous to finely handcrafted bags and other souvenir items. This is known as a prison without walls, inmates tend vast farms instead to idly spending time behind bars
PALAWAN WIDLIFE RESCUE & CONSERVATION CENTER (PWRCC) it is formerly Crocodile Farming Institute which was established in 1987. It is a showcase of successful conservation project of two endangered species found in the country Crocodylus porosos and Crocodylus mindorensis. Other wildlife can also be found in the vicinity area located in Barangay Irawan, Puerto Princesa City.
PALAWAN MUSEUM a repository of Palawan relics and artifacts among which are those from Tabon cave of Quezon, Palawan where skull of the first Filipino dated 22,000 years B.C was found.
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHEDRAL it was established in 1872, a Spanish expedition proclaimed the Immaculate Conception of Mary as the patroness of Puerto Princesa. That same year, the first mass was celebrated here.
PLAZA CUARTEL a restore ruin of an old garrison where Japanese soldiers burned 143 Americans prisoners of war inside the tunnel. Only 11 prisoners survived to tell the story.
PRINCESS EULALIA PARK featuring the statue of a princess whom the park was named. It is where Don Jose Sostao head of the colonizing expedition read the decree of the Foundation of Puerto Princesa on March 4, 1872.
Legend attributes the name Puerto Princesa to a Princess – like maiden who was said to roam around the place at a certain nights of the year. On the other hand, practical people attribute the name to the strategic location of the place as a seaport – naturally protected the whole year and can accommodate all kinds of sea vessels, a royal haven for ships and a virtual princess of ports as the Spanish colonizers saw it.
History, however, signifies that the name was given in honor of Princess Eulalia of Spain who was born to the reigning monarch, Queen Isabela II and her consort, Dr. Francisco de Asis.
The history of Palawan may be traced back 22,000 years ago as confirmed by the discovery of the fossils of the Tabon cave man in Quezon, Palawan. Athough the origin of the cave dwellers is not yet established, anthropologists believe these came from Borneo traveling across the land bridge that connected Palawan with Borneo. The similarity of Palawan’s flora and fauna with that of Borneo fostered this belief.
The name Palawan was believed to come from Chinese word “PA-LAO-YU” meaning “The Land of Beautiful Safe Harbor” and a Spanish word PARAGUA which likens the shape of the island to a closed umbrella.
